Vitamins in Pregnancy

If you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, you probably know that it is important for you to get plenty of folic acid either with a supplement or through your daily diet. Folic acid helps to reduce brain and spinal defects in your baby, especially early in your pregnancy. What you may not know is how important it is to take multivitamins as well.

A study was recently published in the medical journal Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention that noted the importance of taking multivitamins if you are trying to conceive or are newly pregnant. Their research concluded that women who take multivitamins early in their pregnancy may reduce the risk that their child will develop certain brain tumors.

What Can I Expect At My OB/GYN Visits?

Seeing your OB/GYN regularly during your pregnancy is a must to keep both you and your baby healthy. During your visits, you will probably receive several standard tests that will tell your doctor that you and your baby are progressing nicely through your pregnancy.

Early in your pregnancy your doctor will screen you for Hepatitis B, AIDS, Syphilis, Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. Any of these can be life threatening to both you and your baby if left untreated.

A complete blood count, or CBC, will be performed through a simple blood test early in your pregnancy. Your blood type will be determined in case you need a blood transfusion at any time during your pregnancy. You will also receive an antibody test to see if you have a potential for blood diseases in both you and your baby.
