My Body: After Delivery

If you are anything like me, from the moment you found out you were pregnant you began to read. What will happen this month? How will my body change? What will delivery be like? What do I need to do to take care of a newborn? But not once did I look for a book that told me what my body would be like after I became a mother. It was always about the pregnancy and then the baby. I seemed to have fallen through the cracks somewhere in between!

Here is the real scoop, because you don't disappear after you give birth. You are just as important, and need to know what you will look like and what you will be feeling postpartum.

Cesareans

Delivering your baby by cesarean may not be what you had planned, but it is nothing to worry about - especially if it will be best for both you and your baby. Knowing exactly what will happen can help to alleviate any fears you have. Remember - never be hesitant to ask your OB/GYN any questions prior to the surgery. He or she will be able to put your mind at ease as the amazing day approaches - the birth of your baby!

If your cesarean section is planned, you will be asked to stop all food and drink at midnight the evening before. Many women are given a spinal anesthetic for their c-section. This allows the mother to be awake during the delivery and does not cause nausea as a general anesthesia might. A Foley bladder catheter will be inserted so your bladder can be emptied, ensuring it will not get in the way of the surgeon. You will also be given an intravenous line.
